I HAVE A 1973 FENDER JAZZ BASS (named Sista) with stock pickups and a gold pickguard, and a 2002 KSD 5-string (named Peaches) with Nordstrand pickups and a pickguard I made myself. The rig shown here is my Gallien-Krueger 700RB II with one of two Neo 410 cabs. I always get complements on my tone, and asked how I get it. The secret is all about pickup placement—my ’73 Jazz sounds like Marcus Miller’s bass because older Jazz Bass pickups are in a different position. Newer J-Basses have pickups that are closer together, and will never sound like Marcus’s bass. I retired Sista because she is so valuable; my KSDs pickups have been repositioned (by me) so it will sound like the Fender, but as a 5-string.
