Fodera Unveils New 2016 Bass Models (FULL GALLERY)

Fodera Basses gives you a preview of their newest models of basses that will be debuting at The NAMM Show 2016.
By BP Staff ,

Each year, we design and build a number of Custom basses specifically to showcase and sell at the NAMM Show, one of the largest music trade shows on the planet. Since these custom instruments are not built for specific customers, Joey, Vinny, and Jason have historically chosen the specs for them. This year the entire team was given a chance to be involved in the design process. The team split into several groups, and each group was charged with working with the partners to design one of our 2016 NAMM basses. We had a great time and designed some truly unique and outstanding instruments, showcasing the passion of the individuals who make up our small company! These basses will be available for purchase on a first come first serve basis through our e-store (click here). Also, if you are attending NAMM this year, stop by our booth (#5286) and say hi! We'll have all of our NAMM and Standard basses on display and members from the Fodera team including Joey, Jason, Laura, and Phil will be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

What we have here is 2016 NAMM bass #1, designed entirely by the owners of Fodera themselves, Vinny, Joey, and Jason. For their NAMM bass, the partners chose to go with an Emperor 5 Elite with an Ash body, Alder tone block, and Birdseye Maple fingerboard. This combination yields a tone that has the punch and articulation of a classic 70s Ash/Maple combo, but a touch warmer thanks to the inclusion of the Alder tone block. This makes it a more even tone for fingerstyle without sacrificing any of the fidelity of the slap sound.

From afar, this bass looks classic and somewhat understated (with a non-solid Holly top, matching wooden pickup covers, 5-piece Maple neck with Bubinga stringers, and an Ebony ramp) but a closer look reveals more levels of detail including tulip inlays at the 12th and 24th frets, a flame neck center, and copious amounts of figure in the Birdseye Maple fingerboard, and the only piece of Birdseye Alder we have ever seen the tone block!

This Emperor 4 Elite was built for NAMM 2016 and was designed with team members Laura, Chris, and Phil. This bass features an Alder body, Black Limba tone block, and a very special (and extremely rare) Tulipwood fingerboard. Tulipwood is not a typical fingerboard material for us, but it is a relative of the Rosewood family and has a sound similar to a hypothetical blend of Rosewood and Maple. Tonally, this bass is on the warm side of the spectrum with a deep, fat low end, rich, growling mids, and sweet, round highs.

This instrument also features a gorgeous figured Bloodwood solid top, and matching wooden pickup covers. The Tulipwood fingerboard contains a very unique combination of sapwood and heartwood that lends it it’s striking look! This bass is truly a feast for the eyes and the ears!

This Yin Yang Deluxe Monarch is another of the 2016 NAMM basses, and was designed with team members Adam and Aaron. This bass features a Walnut body with an Ebony fingerboard, giving it a tone that is warm yet articulate with punchy lows, compressed mids, and clear, bell-like highs. Inspired by some of the fascinating Yin Yang top configurations that we’ve been commissioned to build over the past few years, we chose the interesting (and beautiful) combination of Spalted Maple and Ebony for the top.

As an added aesthetic touch, the decision was made to put no inlays on the fingerboard, with the exception of a single Spalted Maple Yin Yang dot. The inherent simplicity of the plain Ebony fingerboard and top wood juxtaposed against the complexity and chaotic character of Spalted Maple creates the unique look of this instrument and, in many ways, embodies the philosophical meaning behind the ancient symbol.

This instrument was also built with a 5-piece Maple neck with Ebony stringers, as well as wooden Yin Yang pickup covers. Don’t forget to check out the close up pictures for a better look at that wonderful top!

This Emperor II 5-string is one of our 2016 NAMM basses and was designed with team members Emily and Jordan. This instrument features a Mahogany body, Mahogany tone block, and a Birdseye Maple fingerboard. Tonally, this bass is rich and punchy, with a fat low end, growling mids, and percussive, articulate highs. Duncan J/J single coils provide a decidedly “vintage” vibe for this build as well.

This bass also features a stunning solid Grenadillo top, loaded with sapwood and flame figure. We loved the top wood so much, we used it to make wooden pickup covers as well as a back peghead veneer! In addition, this instrument features a number of other aesthetic touches including black pearl block inlays, a 5-piece Maple neck with Bubinga stringers, and a very special wooden butterfly logo with an aluminum “f”!

This MG-Shaped Imperial 5 is one of the instruments built for the 2016 NAMM show, and was designed with Fodera team members Andres and James. This bass features an Ash body, Walnut tone block, and Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard. This somewhat rare (for us) wood combination yields a wonderfully balanced tone with a powerful, punchy low end, ever-so-slightly compressed mids, and warm yet articulate and highly nuanced highs. With 33” scale, 26 frets, E-C tuning and narrow string spacing, this bass is very well suited to chordal and melodic playing, but has no problem holding down a fat groove!

This instrument also features a super-rare Golden Amboyna Burl solid top with matching wooden pickup covers and ramp, as well as Abalone block inlays and a 5-piece Maple neck with Bubinga stringers! Don’t forget to check out the close-up photos to see the intricate figure of that stellar top!

This Imperial 5-string in one of our 2016 NAMM basses and was designed with team members Rob and Dan. Built with a Walnut body, Black Limba, and Macassar Ebony fingerboard, this instrument has a bright and aggressive tone with punchy lows, snappy mids, and clear, bell-like highs.

This Imperial 5 also features a gorgeous light Buckeye Burl non-solid top, along with matching wooden pickup covers, and a 5-piece Maple neck with Wenge stringers. We opted to go with no inlays on the face of the fingerboard, to better show off the copious amounts of figure in this rare and beautiful Macassar Ebony!

Here is a very rare opportunity to purchase a Hybrid for immeditate delivery! This Spruce Hybrid came to us through our Certified Pre Owned program and is in as-new condition and comes with our full instrument warranty. This 5-string Hybrid features an Alder body, Alder tone block, Ebony fingerboard, 3-piece Red Oak neck, and a Spruce top and back. It also features a single Duncan dual-coil pickup in the same location used on Anthony Jackson’s Presentation II, and totally passive electronics with no external controls.

Like the Presentation II and other Hybrids we have built, it is very difficult to capture the tone of this instrument with words. The sustain is incredible, and there is a depth and nuance to the tone that is unlike any solid-body instruments we make. We’re thankful for the opportunity to produce another of these incredibly challenging, but extremely rewarding instruments!

We are very proud to announce the all-new Fodera Monarch-P! A completely new Standard model designed from the bottom-up to be your go-to instrument when you want both the vintage-P vibe and the legendary playability of a Fodera. Based on the Monarch 4-string shape (with contours that are unique to the Monarch-P) and using the classic tone-wood combination of an Alder body, Indian Rosewood fingerboard and Maple neck, the Monarch-P looks and plays like a Fodera but sounds deliciously old-school.

Completely passive, the Fodera Monarch-P features an in-house wired circuit consisting of premium 250k solid shaft pots, a 0.047uf capacitor and 1/4” input jack. For the pickups we auditioned multiple options and through this process selected an Aguilar P-pickup that was designed with the legendary early 60’s P-Bass tone in mind. The 22-fret neck is crafted from three-piece, Hard Rock Maple with dimensions that are a touch thicker than a “typical” Monarch, but in a way that maintains the optimal balance between tone, playability and comfort.

The top is fashioned from a premium piece of book-matched Ivorywood and all of the hardware is completely proprietary including our high-mass Standard bridge. Additionally the Monarch-P is built with a control cavity so that if you wanted to add a preamp down the road there is a place to do it. Finally, the Monarch-P was crafted with no natural shell products which makes it the very first Fodera that can be shipped internationally without requiring a costly and time-consuming permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Priced at $3,995 and built by the same people, in the same shop, using the same methods as our fully Custom instruments makes the Monarch-P an incredible value.

*The Monarch-P will begin shipping between April and June 2016
