I LIVE IN A SMALL ONE-BEDROOM APARTMENT in Los Angeles with my wife and child, so I have to be as efficient as possible with space without compromising on the wide palette of sounds I need. After years of research and buying and selling, I think I’ve finally settled down with gear that fits in the corner of my bedroom (this was my project while we were “nesting”).
I have a Nordstrand-modded Yamaha BB424, originally bought as a backup, but scored an awesome bass with a great P sound and feel. For modern J-style, my Carvin SB5000 can pretty much do anything, and has a killer B. I’ve played a lot of boutiques, but this one is that good! Next is a Lakland Skyline Hollowbody with La Bella flatwounds, and a relic’d fretless Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray (with Pino’s signature), with an epoxied fingerboard.
Amp-wise, I have a lightweight Genz-Benz Shuttle 600-watt 1x12 combo that handles most gigs, with a matching 2x10 when needed for more air. Great for single-trips to my upper unit!
For effects, I was able to get a wide range of pedals onto a cutting-board from Bed Bath & Beyond that I converted. It has a TC Electronic Polytune, Custom effect-loop switcher by East River Sound, Tech 21 NYC Red Ripper, Electro-Harmonix Bass Micro Synth (with custom artwork), modded Tone Freak Abunai (TS-9 style), Aguilar Filter Twin, and MXR Phase 90. For sessions, I use my Demeter Tube DI.
I play most styles of music professionally, and really do enjoy getting to actually use all this stuff , from country to electro-pop, and it’s nice being able to somehow have it fi t in that little corner. I keep all the cases under the bed and the crib. Livin’ for the City. Now let’s gig!
