Aaron Germain: Before You Go [aarongermain.com]

San Francisco Bay Area doubler Aaron Germain shines on Before You Go, his debut as a leader. His rich and warm acoustic sound, courtesy a mic’d Romanian flatback, is the perfect sonic color for the album’s sophisticated contemporary jazz vibe, and he wields the electric with equal taste and panache, especially on the wickedly funky “Deep Breath.”

CD Review: Legally Blynd "You"

They call themselves Legally Blynd because they’re oblivious to genre, and sure enough, this band of Bay Area badasses combines reggae, soul, gospel, R&B, and blues for a sound that’s both refreshingly original and surprisingly familiar.

Chad Taylor-Circle Down [482 Music]

This fantastic record’s dour cover—a raindrenched window overlooking an urban thoroughfare—belies the joyfully dense music within. New Yorker Chris Lightcap, a bassist with significant credits with his own bands, ably tackles the tricky, rhythmically multilayered compositions with a woody tone and overarching melodiscism that helps to ground the cerebral songwriting. Circle Down is an excellent piece of modern jazz craftsmanship.
