Bass Player Presents is happy to help spread the good word about two badass bassists hooking up for a date delving into the down low.
Kai Eckhardt’s credits include top jazz stars as John McLaughlin and Billy Cobham. As a co-founder of the genre-jumping ensemble Garaj Mahal, he’s been instrumental in bringing jazz sensibilities to a broad audience. The Kai Eckhardt Band is a group of international aces including drummer Sean Rickman (Steve Coleman, Garaj Mahal), keyboardist Osam Ezzeldin (Zakir Hussain, Billy Cobham, Chuck Rainey), and guitarist Christopher Robinson (Trilok Gurtu, David Friesen, Trey Gunn, Dave Weckl).
Here’s a sample of what BP Editor Chris Jisi had to say about Eckhardt’s latest CD, Zeitgeist:
“Opening with a flurry of harmonics and an R&B-rooted, odd-time ostinato, ‘Seven Cows’ journeys from fuze to jazz, with a stop for Kai’s fierce fretless solo. Further instrumental gold can be found on ‘The Wake-Up Call,’ built around Kai’s ridiculous and relentless slap part, and his bouncing finger-funk figure on ‘Chester the Pester.’ ‘Giant Slaps’ is a killer culmination of Kai’s two-handed chordal slapping technique using the Coltrane standard as a template for what he refers to as his ‘3D sound.’ Call it ‘bassgeist’ at its finest.”

Watch Eckhardt play this monster bass solo:
Eckhardt is a Bay Area resident who teaches at the Jazz School Institute in Berkeley, has mentored numerous players in the region, and is a guru to many including Ariane Cap (Generation Esmeralda, Girls Got the Blues). When BP presented Solo Bass Night 5 at the Freight & Salvage last year in Berkeley, California, we witnessed an inspiring sample of Cap’s latest project, the Oon duo with bassoonist Paul Hanson (Béla Fleck, Eddie Money, Dennis Chambers). “Dear Prudence” was particularly fascinating. Cap demonstrated sick tapping skills on her Marleaux 6-string, and about three-fourths of the way through the Beatles classic, she reversed her hands on the fingerboard and rebooted the groove via overhand tapping. Bass Player will be onsite with free magazines, plus strings and accessories from sponsor D’Addario/Planet Waves when these two Bay Area earthquakers team up to put on what will surely be a singular experience at the historic Empress Theatre with its new Tectonic sound system in Vallejo on the last day of February.
