The man who refers to the acoustic bass as “Mother Earth” is perhaps the most happening jazz player on the planet, and we’re pumped to zoom in on him at Yoshi’s pristine jazz house and Japanese restaurant in Oakland’s Jack London Square. This is a one-night, one-show engagement where Bass Player will be onsite to hand out free magazines, D’Addario strings and Planet Waves accessories.

Christian McBride’s gutsy sound, athletic agility, and head for harmony have drawn comparisons to the lofty Ray Brown with whom CMB recorded as a member of the early ’90s group Superbass. McBride’s list of credits includes sideman work with Sting, Pat Metheny, Sonny Rollins, Paul Simon, and McCoy Tyner to name a select few. Out Here is McBride's 11th recording as a leader and his first leading a trio. He plays with pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. Both are younger players who have been performing with McBride’s smallest group for about three years.

“It’s a pretty diversified trio,” says McBride in his press release. “The real core foundation is hardcore swinging blues and the American songbook.”

For in depth McBride insights and awesome anecdotes follow through to Bass Player’s web exclusive unedited Christian McBride material from 2009. The funny Sting story alone is worth the click.

CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE's Straightahead Masterwork

HE’S 37 YEARS OLD AND HAS WON A GRAMMY, BEEN COMPARED TO RAY BROWN on upright, toured with Chick Corea and John McLaughlin on electric, gotten first-call treatment from both hardcore jazzers (Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner) and pop stars (Sting), arranged for orchestras, directed the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, obtained artist residencies at the Detroit and Monterey Jazz Festivals, and even conducted his own radio show about jazz and—wait for it—sports. But for Philly native Christian McBride, being referred to as one of the masters still evokes incredulity. “Are you kidding? I’m still the young phenom,” he says, chortling. “I can feel it now. I’ll be 70, and all those old jazz writers are gonna be going, Young Christian McBride, in his brief career . . . .”
