Fusion guru Victor Bailey has countless cool credits ranging from Weather Report to LL Cool J, to Mary J. Blige, but playing in a power trio with progressive guitarist Larry Coryell and Return to Forever drummer Lenny White--resulting in 2005’s Electric and 2006’s Traffic--liberated him to stretch out on bass like never before.

“That trio opened up a lot of things for me,” he told BP in 2009. “It was probably the first gig where I could do all of the things that I do on the instrument. Almost every gig I’ve done since moving to New York had a keyboard player or a guitar player and at least one horn player, so in those contexts I needed to be more of the conventional bass player in the band. But in a stripped down trio setting with Lenny and Larry there was a need for me to fill up more room, which led me to experimenting with chording, tapping and different effects. It really opened my mind, and I have to credit Larry for encouraging me to put it all out there.”

Coryell, Bailey, White’s live show blends virtuosic original compositions with interpretations of jazz and classic rock standards. Originals include go-for-the-throat throwdowns like “Judith Loves Jazz,” “Door #3” and “Overruled.” Crowd-pleasing covers include Thelonious Monk’s “Misterioso” and Hendrix’s "Manic Depression.” Occasionally CBW offers up a gentle acoustic respite on tunes including “Jake’s Lullaby” and “Joyce’s Favorite.”

CBW will play two nights at Yoshi’s Oakland—one show per night at 8pm—on Wednesday the 24th and Thursday the 25th of September. BP Presents will be onsite with free mags and D’Addario swag on the second date. Come feed your need for top-shelf tunes, luscious low end, and succulent sushi!
