The San Francisco Bay Area is on the brink of a historic weekend with surviving members of the Grateful Dead honoring 50 years and bidding Fare Thee Well at Levi’s Stadium in the South Bay. Bass Player Presents is excited to be part of a killer Pre-Dead show on Thursday that will kick off festivities from Dead guitarist Bob Weir’s Sweetwater Music Hall just north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Mill Valley, CA. Every jam band bassman owes a debt to the Dead’s Phil Lesh, and two of the very best—Pete Sears of Moonalice, and Steve Adams of ALO and Nicki Bluhm & the Gramblers will surely throw down oodles of awesome improvisation at this psych-up event.
Moonalice’s Pete Sears connects British folk, blues, and psychedelic rock with sister San Francisco sounds. Keyboard and bass-session work for Rod Stewart and tours with Long John Baldry prompted Sears to join Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna, and led to collaborations with John Lee Hooker. Sears’ sound has ranged from bright and aggressive with Jefferson Starship (think of “Stranger”) to the mellower, flatwound sound he favors in Moonalice. Similarly, his technique ranges from extremely simple to rather complex. His far-out fingerstyle becomes a furious blur of motion when he truly takes off. Sears’ decades-long search to retrieve his stolen custom Doug Erwin bass ended successfully in 2013, and we fully expect him to play the instrument at this Pre-Dead show, as Erwin also built Jerry Garcia’s most iconic instruments. Show opener Jason Crosby & Friends is a veritable San Francisco Bay jamband all-star team. Crosby is a keyboardist, fiddle player, and vocalist that performs regularly with Lesh, and Crosby is a fixture at both Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads venue, and at the Sweetwater. On this special occasion, Crosby will have Jay Lane (RatDog, Primus) on drums, and Steve Adams on bass. Adams has been a stalwart anchor at the bottom of the Bay Area’s thriving jam scene for over 13 years. ALO sells out ballrooms near and far, and Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers is currently riding high on a new release called Loved Wild Lost. Adams is an understated, fingerstyle P-Bass devotee with impeccable instincts. Any jam-style adventure is likely to wind up in the most musical place with Adams steering from the stern. Hippie rockers from around the globe are descending upon the Bay Area for Fare Thee Well weekend, and this Bass Player Presents Pre-Dead kickoff show with Moonalice and Jason Crosby & Friends is where it all begins.
