Super rock trio the Winery Dogs featuring singular bass talent Billy Sheehan (David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, Steve Vai), progressive drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theatre, Transatlantic), and guitarist/lead vocalist Richie Kotzen (Mr. Big, Poison) is burning up the road supporting its sophomore release, Hot Streak [Loud & Proud]. Bass Player and Guitar Player are happy to help present the band’s San Jose stop at the righteous RockBar Theater on November’s first Monday.
The Dogs’ musical virtuosity is off the charts, and the way they come together over a riff or a fill is especially impressive, but their vocals and compositional focus separate them from other chops-oriented bands. Kotzen’s voice is so wide-ranging and powerful that he could be mistaken for Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell at times.
“I’m glad we’re not playing it safe and just doing songs that automatically fit in the category of what we did on the first record,” Sheehan concludes. “Some of them are a little different, and we definitely took chances. You have to do that—otherwise, you don’t grow.”
