One of the most original drummers alive, Chris “Daddy” Dave is best known for his work with D’Angelo, Meshell, and Maxwell. Here, the Houston-born stickman delivers a dynamic 23-track (more like sonic excerpts) solo debut, ten featuring his most frequent and lethal bass-mate, Pino Palladino. “Cosmic Slop” is the plucker’s pick, with Pino’s ear-grabbing, out-of-nowhere fills. He also sits way back on “Slim & Juicy” and “Didn’t Exist,” captures an upright double-stop vibe on “Welcome,” and finds the sweet spots within the dual feel of “Off the Cuff.” Elsewhere, Derrick Hodge provides effected “space bass” on “Live in H Town,” Stokley Williams handles the island gallop of “Flammable,” Thundercat is both subterranean and chordal on “Drums & Sexxxxx,” and chief among Jon Jon Webb’s four tracks is his probing, stretching support on “In Her Drum” and “Africa … I Freak Her.” Did I mention the album is a free download at Dave’s website?
