Flying Lotus’ latest musical installment is an explosive patchwork of short bursts that merge fusion, electronic, and rock flavors. On the first half, longtime co-instigator Thundercat, who’s right at the nucleus of the chaos, drops crazy-fast lines that evoke bebop horn sections, powering “Tesla,” “Turkey Dog Coma,” and “Dead Man’s Tetris.” As the record comes down from its psychedelic trip in the second half, Thundercat eases the vibe with his smooth grooves and tranquil falsetto vocals.
