“If you could take a bunch of Funk porridge, fold in some crunchy beats, squeeze them it into a virtual smoothie-blender and pile it high with some thick bass grooves, this would be it.” - Freekbass

Cincinnati-based bass wizard Chris “Freekbass” Sherman will be releasing a new single on Color Redon January 15, 2019. “Fre3KroNomokon” is loaded with head bobbing swagger, defiant horn lines, and catchy melodies that will find itself at the top of your playlists to usher in a funky 2019. Would you expect anything less from somebody heralded as “the new spiritual warrior of funk” by Bootsy Collins?

While working on a recording project with Alan Evans (Soulive, Matador! Soul Sounds), Sherman was introduced to Color Red and immediately drawn to the striking cover art and branding. However, it wasn’t until Evans introduced him to label founder, Eddie Roberts (The New Mastersounds/Matador! Soul Sounds) when the possibilities of collaboration started brewing. On an intro phone call, Sherman and Roberts found that their visions aligned. Color Red exists as a platform to put out brand new, all-original music on a weekly basis with all-star, curated collaborations. In a few short months of existence, Color Red tracks have included members of The New Mastersounds, Lettuce, Parliament Funkadelic, and The Greyboy Allstars to name a small handful. Releasing “Fre3KroNomokon ” on Color Red allows both Sherman and Roberts to showcase regional brands of funk music coming together, namely from the historic roots of Cincinnati and Denver’s hotbed for live music.

With a heavy tour schedule over the past couple of years, Sherman hadn’t had much time to hunker down in the studio and had a bunch of bottled up ideas that had yet to be released. After getting introduced to Color Red and meeting an assortment of fellow artists on the road, it didn’t make sense to record an entire album’s worth of music, but rather, share new tracks as they came. In 2019, Freekbass will be releasing a series of tracks over the course of a few months on Color Red in a digital series culminating with a vinyl release.
