On The first anniversary of Jack Bruce’s passing, an emotional tribute concert was held in his honour at London’s Roundhouse. Artists including Ginger Baker, Ian Anderson, Mark King, Phil Manzanera, Vernon Reid and Joss Stone took part in the show which raised in excess of £35,000 for Jack’s local children’s hospice EACH. The concert was musically directed by Nitin Sawhney and organised by Jack’s daughter Natascha, musically known as Aruba Red. An exclusive screening of the event is taking place this evening at the Curzon Cinema in Mayfair, London.
Aruba Red was 8 months pregnant with Jack’s first grandson at the time of the concert and took some time out from her music career after the birth of her baby. She has re-emerged from this hiatus with a touching tribute for her father to celebrate his 75th birthday, a beautiful rendition of the song she also performed at the tribute concert, “We’re Going Wrong”.
“My good friend and bass player Renell Shaw suggested that we record a cover of this song, we discussed loads of options and bringing other musicians on board but then decided to use just bass guitar and vocals. Renell wanted to get right to the essence of the track, strip it right back and create a really intimate tribute doing our best to capture the beauty and what it represents.
We’re Going Wrong is a song that meant a lot to my father, he told me that this was the song that he felt the proudest of and I hope we have done it justice. Happy Birthday Dad, we miss you so much.”– Aruba Red
“The first time I heard We’re Going Wrong, was on a documentary about Jack’s life. The song was completely stripped back, he was singing and accompanying himself on piano and it sounded powerful, I loved it.
The song is so relevant right now. When I spoke to Aruba Red about doing the cover we both agreed that the goal was to create something that respected the message and the music. I feel like we achieved that. Thanks for everything Jack.” – Renell Shaw
Aruba Red’s new EP Holy Waters will be released independently in June of this year: www.arubaredmusic.com
