Joseph Patrick Moore, To Africa With Love [Blue Canoe]
Atlanta’s Joseph Patrick Moore (Earl Klugh, Stewart Copeland, Chris Duarte) isn’t just a busy sideman and record label owner—he’s a prolific solo artist. Moore’s eighth album is a bass-laden homage to Africa, a continent he’s visited in his work for the charity Heart For Africa. It’s obvious Moore’s got lots going on as a player, but he’s careful never to push the point too stridently on this collection of tunes composed, expertly arranged, engineered, mixed and produced by Moore—that soothe as much as they groove. There’s range as well: the title track sounds like it could be a U2 song and has an appropriately rockish and edgy bass tone, while the leadoff solo and fretless undertones on “Stained Glass Aura” are classic jazz/fusion timbres. Other tunes feature slapped melodies, roiling worldbeat grooves, tight 16th-note funk lines, and plenty of dark-toned long notes when necessary. More than anything, it all feels relaxed and mature, just like Moore’s playing throughout.
