Reminiscent of the classic two-horn writing on early- ’60s Blue Note sides, yet leading-edge in the vocabulary of the improvised solos and support, this outstanding debut disc by the English-born Mason Brothers (trumpeter Brad and trombonist Elliot) affirms the New York City jazz cycle. The brothers gather vets Scott Colley, pianist Dave Kikoski, drummer Antonio Sanchez, and saxman Chris Potter (plus liner notes by Wynton Marsalis), who thoroughly embrace the eight originals. This includes the Latin-shaded “24/7,” which boasts the bass-clef brilliance of Elliot (whose musicalminded technical mastery of the trombone summons Hadrien Feraud on bass); “Stage Pints,” an anagram of “Giant Steps” (with the latter’s backwards melody as part of the head); the reflective ballad “Gone Home”; and “Outside In,” a 12-bar bop blues capped by a probing solo from Colley, whose seeing-eye bass work is a CD-wide catalyst.

Talented Terri Lyne Carrington is equally at home as a straight-ahead or groove drummer, and while her latest leans to the smoother side, she exhibits plenty of musical depth, as do the cadre of top bassists on hand. “Sherwood Forest” co-bills George Duke and Christian McBride’s electric bass (with Richard Patterson down below); “Ready” Freddie Washington grounds four cuts, most notably the Terri Lyne/Les McCann-sung soul ballad, “Hold Me Again.” Jimmy Haslip adds sophisticated support to the brass-driven “Papasan” and a radically-reharmonized “Let It Be,” and Matt Garrison reigns free on “No Not One (for Helen).”
