Christchurch, New Zealand based Stonefield Music is planning to make a big splash in the world of electric bass with their full range of four, five and six string basses as well as a line premium cases. Beginning with a blank page re-design of an electric bass and taking nearly five years of development before company founder Tomm Stanley felt the instruments were ready for a global launch, a large part of that time was spent designing a new type of tailpiece tuner and a passive electronics system that allowed for high, mid and low tone controls.

Stanley relates that he always admired the balance and ergonomics of tailpiece tuning but felt that past offerings have been difficult to operate, require special strings or shorter scale lengths. He set out to design a tailpiece tuner that looked like something that belonged on an electric bass, was easy to operate and allowed users to choose their strings from just about any brand they liked."

Tomm also expressed his point of view on instrument electronics, "While the extended tonal pallet of active electronics cannot be denied, I think that there are parts of the frequency spectrum that come across quite sterile and I was always annoyed by the electronics either overdriving my amp or the battery deciding it was time to die at the most embarrassingly obvious moments. I wanted that range of tonal control, but I wanted it in a passive electronics set-up."

Stonefield is excited about the opportunity to bring something so new and different, yet at the same time so familiar, to the world of bass. Tailpiece tuning and the remarkable passive electronics are only the beginning of a long list of unique features on Stonefield basses. Tomm acknowledges that with so many unique features some players have felt the whole package is a bit intimidating but an overwhelming amount of positive feedback from test players prompted him to decide that it was time to introduce the brand.
