BRIAN FOXI’M HAVING A HARD TIME BELIEVING THAT THE HOLIDAYS ARE UPON US. BUT TRY AS I might, there’s no ignoring the dipping temperatures, turning leaves, and long sleeves that even we California boys and girls see this time of year. Chalk it up to my not-so-inner introvert or my increasingly bear-like physique, but this is the season that makes me want to hibernate. I could certainly afford to catch a few zzz’s—as I type, we’re literally hours away from the start of this year’s Bass Player LIVE!, and though it promises to be off -the-freaking-charts awesome, I’ve paid quite the toll in the long days, late nights, and tears of joy and frustration that come with the job of putting it all together. (For the record, I’m not alone here; Joe Perry, Lauren Gerber, Chris Jisi, Tyler Reed, Donny Emerick, and many others put just as much—if not more—into making BPL! the biggest and best bass hang of the year. To all of them, THANK YOU!). So there’s that. We’ll all know next month if I survived the ordeal.

For those who aren’t quite sure how the sausage gets made in the Jungle-esque world of magazine publishing (and I pray that’s nearly all of you), this is also the time of year when we put together an editorial plan for the upcoming year. (What’s that? It was due in August?! Well, I suppose I’ve always played a bit behind the beat. . . .) This is where you 99 percenters come in. We need you. What did we do last year that you dug? How did we piss you off ? Let you down? Get you thinking? Make your day? We want to know it all—good, bad, and ugly. Tweet us @BassPlayerNow, post a comment on facebook.com/bassplayermag, or email me at bfox@musicplayer.com with the subject “BP 2013,” and let your voice be heard. I’m listening, I swear.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this and every issue of BP. Couldn’t care less about Steve Harris? Dig our transcription with unsung R&B hero Leon Sylvers. Not in the market for a fancy DI? Check out our review of two affordable 1x15 combos. Not interested in becoming a better bass player? There, I’m afraid, I can’t help you. It’s getting chilly out there, friends. So grab your F-clef Snuggie, get cozy, and Dig Deeper!

SHEESH. I TAKE THIS EDITORIAL GIG JUST LIKE ANY PLAYING GIG THAT COMES MY WAY— very seriously. Bass Player was there for me when I was a beginning bass player some 20+ years ago, and I owe it to the community at large to do my best to ensure the magazine is of the high quality that we all deserve.

“OH MY GOD, I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S ALREADY [INSERT MONTH HERE].” THAT’S definitely a mantra around my house, where two thirds of the residents live pretty much by the academic, rather than Gregorian calendar.
