WE HAVE LOTS OF GREAT STUFF FOR YOU IN THIS ISSUE OF BASS PLAYER, AND I HOPE you each get lots of mileage from this month’s news, features, reviews, and lessons. But first, a personal plea. . . . As we were putting the finishing touches on this issue, Hurricane Sandy was absolutely decimating the coastal neighborhoods of New York and New Jersey. (Of course, before the storm made landfall on American soil, it brought death and devastation to many parts of the Caribbean, as well.) Just as our East Coast friends, family, and co-workers were beginning to assess the destruction, a second storm came in the form of a Nor’easter, compounding the misery across the region.

What does this have to do with playing bass? Everything. Whether you play 4-string or 11-string, electric or upright, djent or jazz, you are a human being with a heart, a soul, and a brain. It doesn’t take much of any to realize that we should help those in need. Some good people regularly give to charities of various types. I’m a little ashamed to admit I’m never been one of those people. But I have contributed to efforts to help those affected by Sandy at home and abroad, and I ask that you do, to.

With that, I’ll step off my soapbox and invite you to lose yourself a little bit in these pages. For me, playing bass is a wonderful escape from some of the ickier things in life. So is making a magazine about it. So thank you, and enjoy.

“OH MY GOD, I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S ALREADY [INSERT MONTH HERE].” THAT’S definitely a mantra around my house, where two thirds of the residents live pretty much by the academic, rather than Gregorian calendar.
